Your teeth can look whiter and brighter in an instant without a visit to the dentist and without whitening trays or special toothpastes. The easiest and most cost-effective way to a megawatt smile is as simple as choosing the right lipsticks, glosses and balms to wear — the ones with cool blue undertones in them. It works because blue is almost opposite yellow on the color wheel so when you choose lip products with blue undertones in them they’ll play down any warm yellow tones present in your teeth and play up the white cooler tones instead.
For a tooth-whitening effect you can’t go wrong with blue-based reds, bright pinks and berry tones, but steer clear of warm yellow-based corals, oranges and browns which will have the opposite effect of what you’re aiming to achieve. Since blue-based shades can feel too bright for some there are even some blue-based glosses and balms that can be worn alone or as a top coat over any other lipstick.
If you’re having trouble figuring out if a shade is blue-based a simple swipe on a white sheet of paper should do the trick and help you determine if it’s bright and cool with blue or purple undertones or warm with yellow, gold or muddy undertones. If you’re not sure you are up for the task these 5 will have you smiling:
Mac Lipstick in Ruby Woo ($17) has a cult following for a reason. This vivid blue-red shade brightens and makes quite the statement. You can apply just a little bit and use your fingertip to blend it out as a stain, or you can apply it in full force straight from the tube. The long-wearing formula will stay put and last for hours without the need for a touchup.
Nars Audacious Lipstick in Claudia ($32) is a cool pink with a high color payoff that delivers full-coverage and long-wear in a single-stroke and feels super creamy and comfortable on contact.
Lipstick Queen Butterfly Ball in Trance ($24), a gleaming raspberry shade, is my personal go-to, but even it’s not for you know that you can’t go wrong with this line. Every lipstick — from nude to pink, mauve, red, wine and more — contains a whisper of blue pearl that can’t be seen by the eye but instantly whitens your teeth. All are formulated with super hydrating, conditioning vitamins E, C and B as well as aloe vera so they go on creamy and keep your lips moisturized and healthy.
The Estée Edit Flash Photo Gloss ($20) is a high-shine gloss formulated with blue micro-pearls that can be worn alone or over any of your favorite lipsticks. Besides its ability to make your teeth look brighter, it’s also formulated with a delicious vanilla fragrance that will cement its place in your makeup bag.
Sephora Collection Colorful Gloss Balm in Peek-A-Blue ($10) gives you the shine of a gloss and the comfort and texture of a balm. Mango and grape seed oils come together to nourish and condition your lips. To brighten your smile apply a very thin layer of the Peek-A-Blue shade.
