It was the pursuit of luck that drove Gabriel Chanel to surround herself with charms and talisman.
The symbols that traditionally have been used to lure good fortune are the inspiration for the Fall 2013 color collection by the House of Chanel. Fittingly called Superstition, the collection is available now in stores and at chanel.com.
The tones for the Fall collection are very neutral and wintry: sumptuous tones of khaki, beige, bright apricot, pink lead, and soft lavender. The eyes are gray and smokey, and evoke mystery, allure, and a deep and thoughtful beauty. The must-have in this collection are the new “lucky charm” duos, which have shade-matched pairs for the lips and the cheek
As befits the legacy of designer Hubert de Givenchy (think Audrey Hepburns’ LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany’s), the spring launches from Givenchy Beauty are curated, exquisitely designed, and objets d’art that you will want to hold and own.
Case in point, the Ecrin Prive Eyeshadow Quad ($73). The compact alone will make you want to go out and grab this limited-edition palette. Heavyweight and composed of silver zamak (a metal alloy), the top of the case boasts a rivet pattern straight off the runway of Riccardo Tisci, the house’s designer since 2005. Inside, four muted shades are said to reflect the atmosphere of a plush hotel. Taupe, gray, and beige are useable, dare, I say practical
Innovations are always welcome, especially in the beauty department, which produces several mensa-worthy ideas yearly. The spotlight right now is on nail lacquers, which have upped the ante in a pretty big way. Think no top coat or base coat. Think gel polish that you can do at home, and which stays put for a solid two weeks without a chip. Now, those are some pretty impressive results. Here are some unique nail lacquers that we think deserve to take home solid gold medals, and certainly merit stocking up on.
COVERGIRL Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss ($4.99)
The best part of Outlast is that you need only one coat:
this polish is deep and thick. Shown above in 300 Vio-last
Vampires can’t get enough of waitress Sookie Stackhouse on the HBO hit series True Blood and soon you can share the honor. On August 9, HBO and HSN will launch the Forsaken fragrance and beauty collection, inspired by True Blood and guaranteed to transport you to Bon Temps, Louisiana, the fictional setting of the “out-of-the-coffin” vampire saga.
In addition to fragrance, the Forsaken Collection features body products, lipstick, nail color and home scents that capture the spirit of the show where vampires mingle with humans due to the creation of synthetic blood.
Just like Bill Compton, Sookie’s vampire paramour on the show, the Forsaken fragrance ($59.50) is a complex entity.
