We all love a sexy full-lipped pout. After all, a plumped pucker is a sign of youthfulness. Unfortunately, as we age our lips start to lose collagen and our lips become thinner and more flat. The sides of the mouth begin to sag and stubborn wrinkles and lines around the lips begin to form. Thankfully, rather than let our lips succumb to the signs of aging we can seek ways to enhance them with the latest non-surgical procedures or at-home treatments, all promising to give a sexy fuller pout.
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, lip augmentation was one of the most popular facial plastic surgeries for women in 2011. New York City-based Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jon B. Turk says, “Women in general look to lip augmentation because if performed correctly it can yield youthful, sensuous lips.”
In the past, there was a stigma with women getting their lips done—the results were more obvious and looked unnatural. Troy, Michigan-based Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and author of Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Anthony Youn explains that treatments to enhance lips have improved so much over the past several years. “They last longer, hurt less, and look more natural than ever before.”
Temporary fillers containing hyaluronic acid such as Restylane, Juvederm and Prevelle Silk are the latest and most popular non-surgical lip enhancing treatments. These give lips natural looking volume and definition, and can easily be tailored to each patient and lip concern. Most commonly injected into the red part of the lips – or in some cases at severe lines around the mouth – these fillers instantly plump with minimal swelling and pain. Turk prefers to use smaller volumes on his patients for a subtle look. “This gives a more natural appearance without the need for overfilling or the look of “fish lips” so often seen on reality TV.”
Results can last between six to nine months and cost $600 to $1,000, depending on the amount used; recovery typically lasts 24 to 48 hours with some bruising and swelling.
Other temporary lip fillers include the patients own human fat, autologen, which involves extracting fat from another part of the body and then re-injecting the fat into the lip, and collagen injections, which can be irritating and does not have the longevity of other fillers.
Permanent fillers such as silicone or Artefill are not recommended for the lips. “These treatments can cause temporary or permanent lumps and deformity, which may have to be surgically removed for improvement,” adds Youn.
Over-the-counter lip plumpers on the market claim to give lips a fuller pout. These typically come in glosses, serums and lipsticks and contain ingredients such as cinnamon, capsaicin and menthol, which irritate the skin and increase blood flow for a redder color and swelling.Others work by infusing hyaluronic spheres, collagen or peptides, which help boost hydration and stimulate collagen production.
Verdict: For a sexy Scarlett Johanssen pout, non-surgical lip augmentation can give you the extra volume you crave, while still looking natural. However, it can be costly to maintain, and there are some risks such as swelling, irritation or even infection. Over-the-counter lip plumpers can add fullness, but are temporary and can irritate lips.
