Life is full of stress-inducing things and we’re definitely a stressed out nation, but lately I’ve been encountering a lot more freaked-out people than usual. Part of this is due to their day to day experiences like career, marital and family issues but the lead up to election day seemed to put everyone over the edge. Just take a peek at all the social media sites and it’s obvious that there’s lots of animosity, anger, distrust and hopelessness on one side and uncertainty on the other. And though the election is over, many stressed out individuals didn’t lower their cortisol levels the moment the polls closed and all was tallied up.
Whether your candidate won or lost, chances are you’re feeling anxious, stressed and exhausted from all the divisiveness. Over the past few months, this election has cost a lot of people sleepless nights, put an end to many lifelong friendships and I’ve even heard of more than one person who was looking into expat living. If you’re ready to put all the nastiness behind you, come together to embrace the future and find your way back to a state of calm, you will love 3 of my favorite ways to get zen:
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils for therapeutic benefits for your mind, body and skin, and depending on which essences you choose to breathe in, apply topically, or infuse will help you tailor it to the results you’re seeking.
Korres Precious Oils Collection ($135), a curated collection of oils, starts with Sweet Almond Oil, a nourishing base when used alone or mixed with one or more of the four included essential oils. There is relaxing Lavender, calming and sensual Ylang Ylang, revitalizing Peppermint, and refreshing Lemongrass. The collection also includes soul-soothing aromatherapy recipes including bath recipes, a relaxing massage blend, an anti-aging face remedy, a soothing foot bath, hair treatment and beneficial room aromas.
A stress-reducing tonic can be anything that calms the nerves, be it alcohol, a soothing blend of hot tea or a drink made with stress-relieving ingredients.
David Kirsch Wellness Co. Calming Bubbles ($39.99 for 14 packets) is the healthier way help you manage stress. Natural calming agents like gamma-aminobutyric acid help you relax, L-Theanine amino acid calms your mind, Vitamin B6 to boosts your mood and Chromium Picolinate helps curb stress-related cravings.
A nice, hot bath is the perfect way to relax and get a little alone time. It’s actually been scientifically proven to improve the mood and optimism of bathers, no doubt due to the warm, comforting environment and relaxing horizontal position that it entails.
Ren Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil ($48) will elevate that bath to bliss. It blends Moroccan Rose Otto Oil to reduce stress and inflammation, Caryophyllene Nepalese Palmarosa to nourish your skin and Geranium Extract Geranium Oil to hydrate and soothe. Simply pour a bit of this lightly scented bath oil into a full, warm bath and soak away those stresses.
