In this era of bountiful beauty innovations like tinted moisturizers, BB Creams and long-lasting lipsticks comes a wonderful lip color option – velvet lip pencils. Basically these are creamy formulations that masquerade as chubby pencils but give you the coverage of a full bodied lipstick. Most contain a glossy element and provide long lasting color.
NARS Velvet Matte and Gloss Lip Pencils ($24) – These pencils are seriously the bomb, providing full lip coverage with a long-wearing formula. The application is just like a lipstick, but the fun factor is in the crayola-style chubby design of the pencil. The formula is non drying and creamy, and the matte version goes on beautifully without feathering. The glossy version will give you a nice sheen without looking greasy at all. The combination of unique silicones and vitamin E ensure proper lip hydration; the glossy version also has hyaluronic spheres that give lips a lovely buttery texture. Plus, you get 17 beautiful shades in the matte version and 9 versions of the glossy version. My favorites include the sexy, barely-there Buenos Aires in the glossy version, and the almost wine-claret color of Never Say Never in the matte version.
Urban Decay Super Saturated Lip Gloss Color ($19) – This really is a lipstick masquerading as a gloss, with a lot of shine. And I mean a LOT of shine (as you can see from the swatch below). The pencil looks like the NARS version, and it is similar in size. But the formula is completely different. You’ll want to wear this for a glam evening out, or even to the office for a sophisticated glossy look (there’s nothing tacky or high school about this). Formulated with synthetic wax and silica, the Saturated Lip Gloss pencil comes in 8 delicious, sorbet-like colors.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm ($16) – This ultra nourishing balm comes in the form of a stick that’s—well—chubby. Packed with mango and shea butters, this lip formulation leaves your lips feeling extremely soft and well cared for. In 16 natural-looking shades, this is a good pencil to pack for that pre-lipstick boost of color, or on its own when you want just a hint of tint. And yes, it can replace your tube of Carmex. With a beautiful silver-tinted cap, this small stick packs quite a moisturizing punch.
mark Make it Rich Lip Color Crayon ($11) –Full coverage and intense shine from a crayon that’s really reasonably priced: what more can one ask for? You get a lot of control with this crayon, and moisture as well. If you want a creamy lip pencil in colors that tend toward teen faves, opt for these. The six colors from Hot Sauce to Punch are really intense.
