With the launch of Clinique‘s original 8-shade Chubby Stick (immensely popular, but predominantly darker and berry-toned shades), portable makeup never had it so good. They were balmy, dewy, and functional as a lighter veil than chapstick.
Since then, Clinique has put out several versions of the Chubby Stick launch, including the latest Baby Tint Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm ($17) which comes in four delicious crayon-like barrels: Budding Blossom, Poppin’ Poppy, Coming Up Rosy, and Flowering Freesia.
These are some of the sheerest shades I’ve seen on the market, especially in an age where every woman wants to wear something loud on her lips. The formulation is feather soft: vitamin C, shea butter, mango seed butter, and jojoba seed oil. The lip balms have a very jelly bean quality to them, in that they’re colorful — hence the use of jelly beans in the promo image that came with the sticks.
I’d be lying through my eyes if I said that these childlike beauties give pops of color: they give whisper-y tints that will remind you of buds in bloom, rather than fully mature flowers. But this is exactly why they’re called “Chubby Stick Baby Tint.” The idea is to bring out the lips’ natural tone and not look as though anything unnatural has been applied on them.
To complement the Baby Tint comes the new Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm ($21), which gives you rosy cheeks with the swipe of a stick. Its dome-shaped head glides so easily on the cheek and gives a great rosiness for all skin tones; shades include: Robust Rhubarb, Amp’d Up Apple, Roly Poly Rosy, and Plumped Up Peony.
