Dr. Ahn chatted with Beauty In the Bag about the latest innovative treatments in facial plastic surgery and its future predictions for the future in the next 5-10 years.
1. What are the most popular procedures (surgical and non-surgical) that your patients are asking for right now?
The most popular surgical procedures patients are asking for right now are rhinoplasties (cosmetic nasal surgery) and face lifts with neck lifts. While these procedures are in high demand throughout the year, we definitely experience more volume in the winter months. Many patients take advantage of the cold weather to recover for a week or two. Botox and fillers, such as Juvederm, Voluma, and Volbella, are the most popular non-surgical treatments. Patients love that we deliver natural results and there is hardly any downtime with these treatments, so it fits easily into a busy schedule. We are also getting many requests for CoolSculpting, which is a non-invasive fat reduction procedure. Since it may take a few treatments to notice the best results, many patients start this process now so they can be swimsuit ready for the summer months.
2. What innovative treatments are you most impressed with at the moment and how have they evolved?
Right now, I am most impressed with Fractora. Fractora is a radiofrequency skin treatment that is used in a fractional way to reduce wrinkles, improve skin complexion, and tighten skin. The most commonly treated areas include the full face and neck. You can also use Fractora to target specific areas such as the upper and lower eyelids, forehead and brows, cheeks, lower face, neck, lip lines, and laugh lines. Fractora is non-surgical, and the recovery is only a few days, which makes it an ideal treatment for someone who is looking for improvement but does not have 2 weeks to recover.
I am also impressed with Volbella. I have seen some amazing results in the lips, lip lines, and tear troughs (lower eyelids). This filler is much more subtle than other fillers on the market, which leaves patients looking very natural.
3. Give us your predictions for the future of facial plastic surgery in the next 5-10 years
Many predict there will no longer be the need for facial surgery, such as facelifts and neck lifts because they will be replaced by a machine or a laser that can lift the jowls, eliminate excess skin, and create amazing profiles. I disagree with this thinking. My belief is that there will be a resurgence in patients looking for surgical procedures because the lofty expectations of non-surgical tightening will not have been met. Some of the non-surgical tightening devices do work well, such as Fractora, but not to the extent of surgery. Coupled with exciting advances in wound healing such as “scar-less” surgery and alternative therapies in reducing bruising and swelling post-operatively, the overall surgical recovery will be reduced even further.
