MEET GINA BROOKE – HOURGLASS COSMETICS’ ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

An architect of glamour, Gina Brooke is the artistic director of Hourglass Cosmetics, the popular niche makeup brand created by Carisa Janes. In addition to collaborating with Carisa on product development, Gina leads photo shoots and makes appearances on behalf of the brand. Her work exudes an appreciation for art, color and the rejuvenating power of light. And her gifts have been appreciated by some of the world’s most beautiful faces, including Madonna, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Campbell and Gisela Bündchen. Gina attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and discovered her calling for makeup on her first test shoot. Central to her makeup philosophy is the idea of illumination and the belief that each individual face requires its own approach. Read on to learn more about Gina’s beauty history and tips.

As a former artistic director for Shu Uemura, why did you join Hourglass?

I’ve loved Hourglass since the first time I used the Veil Mineral Primer. It’s a unique, quality brand that defines luxury. Because Hourglass is still relatively small, I can really make an impact and my voice can be heard, which is harder to do at a larger company.

What are your 5 top favorite products in the range and why?

Veil Mineral Primer: A must have for all women. Paraben, oil and fragrance free, it preps the skin perfectly for makeup application and creates a flawless complexion. It also neutralizes the skin, absorbs excess oil and minimizes the appearance of pores. Best of all, it completely waterproofs your makeup. I can’t work without it..

Illusion Tinted Moisturizer: This is my secret weapon to a beautiful complexion. Full of anti-aging ingredients, it provides flawless, natural coverage and a dewy, glowing finish because of its light-reflecting properties.

Film Noir Lash Lacquer: My new favorite must-have product. It’s a glossy, top coat for your lashes that instantly emphasizes them. It’s amazing and unlike anything else you see on the market.

Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Raven: I love a bold, red lip. Red instantly transforms the face for an immediate, polished look and my favorite lipstick to use in Femme Rouge in Raven. It’s beyond gorgeous and is loaded with intense pigments for a vibrant red.

Script Precision Liquid Liner: I’m obsessed with this because it’s unlike any eyeliner on the market. It’s an ingenious pen with the smallest tip – measuring just 0.5 mm. It allows for complete precision and control.

How do you feel that women’s views about makeup have changed in the past few years?

Today’s women are more open to experimenting with color and trying something new – I love that they aren’t afraid to make a statement. What are the most important cosmetics every woman should learn how to use? Foundation is the one product that women don’t always get right. It’s key to find the right shade to match your skin tone and then making sure to blend it properly. My tip for finding the right shade is to make sure you are looking at it in natural light.

How do you think Hourglass stands out from other niche color brands?

Hourglass is a very special brand. The products are innovative, elegant and have the highest quality ingredients. Each and every product either contains anti-aging properties and/or leaves out harmful ingredients, such as parabens, sulfates, etc.
