BITB spoke with Dr. Cuber about his most most-performed surgical and non-surgical treatments and the popular “mommy makeover” he offers to patients postpartum.
1. As a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in the body, what are your top 3 surgeries to perform and why?
The three most commonly requested procedures in my practice are breast enhancement, tummy tuck, and liposuction. The majority of my patients are women who have had children and their breasts and tummy are the most common areas they want to improve.
Breast enhancement is also referred to as breast augmentation or breast enlargement. I use the new silicone gel (gummy bear) breast implants. These gel implants allow me to give a beautiful size and shape to a woman’s breast. For the majority of women in my experience, it is very important that their breasts be a size that looks natural and proportionate to their frame or figure. Breast implants come in many different sizes which allow me to place a size that is tailored to a woman’s desired result. My preferred technique of breast augmentation is to place silicone gel breast implants behind the muscle through an inframammary (underneath the breast) incision. This incision heals very nicely and once it fades it is barely visible. By placing breast implants behind the muscle (as opposed to in front) the muscle supports the implants and prevents drooping or sagging at any time in the future.
For some women, especially after having children and breastfeeding, a breast lift may be necessary to achieve the best result when placing implants. The need for a breast lift is usually determined at the initial consultation. Usually, a “mini-lift” (areolar lift) is all that is necessary but in order to correct more significant sagging a lollipop lift may be needed.
Liposuction is the safest and most effective method of removing excess fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen and waist (midsection), arms, hips and thighs. My preferred technique for liposuction is the tumescent technique which in my experience gives great results. Any method of fat removal that utilizes heat such as laser or vaser can increase the risk of burning the skin or creating irregularities. One of our most popular procedures is the Brazilian butt lift. Fat which is removed with liposuction can be transferred to the butt in order to improve the size and shape of the butt and hips.
Many women that I have seen after having children (or even after having one child) develop some loose skin and stretch marks on their tummy. A tummy tuck is the best procedure to give a woman a tight flat tummy because it allows me to tighten not only the loose skin but also tighten and reinforce the ab muscles. Another benefit of a tummy tuck is that I’m able to give the belly button a much better shape and position. My preferred technique of tummy tuck involves making a short length incision that is placed as low as possible such that it may be hidden by a two-piece swimsuit. A tummy tuck is usually done in combination with liposuction in order to get the best results. These two procedures complement each other to give a flat tummy and better shape to the waistline.
2. Can you explain how you approach a ‘mommy makeover’ and what procedures deliver the greatest improvements for new moms?
The Mommy Makeover is one of our most popular procedures. It typically involves breast enlargement with implants, tummy tuck, and liposuction of the waist and flanks. For women who wish to improve the shape of their butt, a Brazilian butt lift can be done at the same time. Most women who are having the mommy makeover have all of their procedures done in one surgery. In my experience, it is perfectly safe to do this, and it allows for one anesthesia and one recovery time. The recovery time after mommy makeover is usually about 10 to 14 days. Most women may resume exercise in approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
3. How do you combine surgical procedure, like liposuction and breast implants, with the non-surgical body treatments you offer?
Our practice offers non-surgical body treatments such as Coolsculpting, Ulthera, and ThermiTight. One of the most exciting new procedures is Cellfina which is the only FDA cleared procedure that specifically targets cellulite which creates the dimples that many women have in their hips, outer thighs, and buttocks. Cellfina can also be combined with fat transfer to the hips and buttocks. The fat transfer restores the loss of volume or fullness whereas the Cellfina smooths out the dimples. Cellfina and fat transfer complement one another to give dramatic results.
Coolsculpting is a non-invasive procedure which reduces fat deposits by freezing the fat. Many people who exercise on a regular basis and eat a healthy diet have stubborn fat deposits that they are unable to get rid of. Coolsculpting is a great way to reduce unwanted fat deposits because there is no downtime or recovery time. The best candidates for Coolsculpting are people who are within 5 to 10 pounds of their ideal body weight and who have good skin quality (elasticity). For people who have larger fat deposits or have loose skin, a better result may be obtained with either liposuction and/or tummy tuck.
