BITB spoke with Dr. Engelman about her work as a dermatologic surgeon and wedding season skincare.
1. What inspired you to become a dermatologic surgeon?
My father is a physician and he took our Chemistry class to the hospital when I was in the 10th grade. I wanted to be a doctor ever since then. In medical school, I was drawn to dermatology because I loved being able to see the disease you are treating. Once in Dermatology residency, I found myself drawn to all of the procedures that our specialty has to offer – lasers, Mohs surgery, injectables, etcetera, so I did a fellowship in Procedural Dermatology and here I am!
2. Wedding season is still upon us! What advice would you give to brides looking to achieve their Big Day glow?
For a perfect glow on the big day, I start weeks out with my patients in preparation.
Two weeks before, I recommend Nerium International Body Contour Cream twice a day and Decléor Aromessance Neroli Essential serum to hydrate skin and boost radiance. One week before, I suggest a facial, like the Oxylight Facial I have in my office to stimulate muscle toning, blood circulation and heal and repair the skin. If you can’t make it in for an appointment, I love Derm Institute Antioxidant Masques, which soothe, soften and hydrate the skin. The night before, combat redness with Natura Bisse’s NB Ceutical cream. The red algae and chamomile extract calms inflammation. On the big day, I would use Vita Liberata’s Self Tanning Mousse and Moroccan Oil Shimmering Body Oil for a beautiful, healthy glow.
3. What skin care products do you use daily and why?
In the morning I start with Derm Institute’s Youth Alchemy eye cream, it immediately reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Then, I use CE Ferulic by Skinceuticals to give my skin extra protection against the strong summer sun. Just 5 drops in the morning helps to boost UV protection – in addition to my daily and anti-pollution shield –Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart + DNA Enzyme Complex™ + Anti-Pollution + Antioxidant Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Hydrating Shield (available in June on ElizabethArden.com).
I have terrible seasonal allergies and will get pretty significant under eye circles as a result. I lean on Cover FX Custom Cover Drops to help camouflage these away. In addition to excellent coverage, the formula is extremely blendable and is water and sweat-proof for up to 16 hours, which is a huge plus during warmer months.
