Beauty in the Bag spoke with Allison about the latest eyebrow trends, tips and why she practices a different technique.
1. Tell us a bit about your background. How did you become a brow expert?
I’ve always been interested in skincare and makeup. While visiting my grandparents, I’d watch my grandmother take care of her skin every night and apply her makeup every morning. I was fascinated. I knew my future would involve aesthetics in some way. I’ve found it’s best to focus on your passions. You’ll be better for it. When you enjoy what you’re doing, it makes for an excellent work environment.
I have been an Aesthetician for 14 years, and I have owned my own business for almost 8 years.
As an Aesthetician, I have the opportunity to help people look and feel better about themselves. That is my favorite part of every day!
One of my most requested services is eyebrow waxing. But, to me, it’s about more than just waxing eyebrows. First and foremost, I try to make each and every client feel very comfortable. I want my clients to know they can trust me. I like to first discuss what they like and don’t like about their eyebrows. Gathering that information helps me determine the look they are going for. If they ask my opinion, then I am very up-front and honest. It may be hard to hear, but some people need to put down the tweezers and step away from the magnification mirror.
2. What type of eyebrows are trending right now?
Full and dark, natural brows are definitely trending right now. Think of Lily Collins, Brooke Shields, or Cara Delevingne. I’ve always preferred the look of a fuller brow. And for those who worry about their own thin brows, my message is: “Do not fear.” There are many ways to achieve this look with makeup and growth serum. Come see me, and I will take care of you!
3. Brow shaping can be painful. Do you have any tips for easing the discomfort? Any advice on how to make waxing results last longer?
It’s not painful for my clients 😉. Seriously, though … that’s for 2 reasons: my technique and the products I use. I’ve done thousands of brows for thousands of clients, and I’ve honed my technique so it is less painful. Second, I use hard wax, which sticks to the hair and not the skin, so it’s less abrasive than traditional strip wax. After waxing, I apply a product made exclusively for me and my clients. It’s called “Xserum+”. It’s made of all-natural ingredients to help soothe and calm the skin, with an added ingredient to help with ingrown hairs and maintain healthy skin. Anyone can use Xserum+ at home, available for purchase at my salon or through my Facebook page.
I advise clients to come in once a month to maintain the look of their beautifully shaped brows. I prefer they don’t do any maintenance between visits because bad things can happen when they pick up tweezers or scissors. I mean, most people don’t try to cut the hair on top of their heads — why would they want to take chances with the hair on the front of their face? Best to leave it to the professionals. 😉
