Scars may have been worn proudly by duelers of yesteryear, but today, no one wants an unsightly reminder of an injury, surgery or accident. Thankfully, scar therapy has a new advocate, the new Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel, which just launched this month.
Formulated to reduce the overall appearance of scars caused by injury, acne, surgery or burns, Mederma Advanced Scar Gel requires only one application per day. A clinical study showed an average of 36% improvement in the overall appearance of scars treated with the gel once daily for eight weeks compared to untreated scars. Daily use results in improved texture, color and softness of scars.
The healing secret behind the gel is Cepalin®, a proprietary botanical extract derived from onions, which is used in all Mederma scar products and stretch marks therapy.
“In a clinical study, onion extract gel applied once daily showed a greater improvement in scar redness, texture and overall appearance compared to scars with no treatment at all,” stated Zoe Diana Draelos, M.D., F.A.A.D., clinical and research dermatologist in High Point, N.C.
Unlike cosmetic pads or silicone sheeting, Mederma Advanced Scar Gel is a transparent topical gel, so it is never noticeable. For best results on new scars, the gel should be applied evenly and gently rubbed into the scar once daily for eight weeks. On old scars, it should be applied once daily for three to six months for the best effect.
“The idea for Mederma Advanced Scar Gel came from our existing consumer base, which was pleased with the results from Mederma products but wanted a more convenient scar treatment option,” stated Emily Klopp, senior brand manager, Mederma.
Mederma Advanced Scar Gel is available in two sizes: 20-grams for about $20 and 50-grams for about $32. It can be purchased from the first aid section of drugstores nationwide as well as drugstore.com and amazon.com.
