By far the biggest buzz in the facial rejuvenation category is around the German pharmaceutical company Merz. In Europe, Merz Aesthetics includes a growing portfolio of fillers including Belotero, a hyaluronic acid derived product currently pursuing FDA approval in the US.  However, the launch of the new Merz facial shaping agent called NOVABEL® has generated unprecedented excitement among practitioners. The immediate effects and minimal to no downtime make the case for NOVABEL® equally compelling for consumers in search of youthful contours and plumped up lines and folds.

NOVABEL® introduced a new class of alginate-based facial shaping agents – naturally derived from sea algae. Developed with their patented Geleon™ technology, it is widely considered a major breakthrough in injectable products for rejuvenation. Algae has many unique properties. For example, in Japan, China and Korea it is used as a food source. It is used as a thickening agent for ice cream and soups, and a stabilizer for syrups and pies. It is also a component of a cerebral implant that is used for stroke patients. Geleons are perfectly round and uniform, homogenous and packed very densely which is unique in facial rejuvenation products.  The microscopic spheres are solid and filled with the alginate material. If you put pressure on them, they will bounce back to their original shape because they are very flexible which makes the range of potential applications very broad.

According to Professor Syed Haq in London, UK, “Geleon™ technology is unique in that Merz has derived and extracted a purified form of carbohydrate from algae. The formulation is able to create greater elasticity to provide the unique properties as a volumizer and facial shaping agent. We get far greater precision, almost surgical precision, with this substance. This is a very versatile product with a global application to the face.” Geleon™ technology is also currently being explored for use in other areas.

NOVABEL® is currently available in the UK through cosmetic doctors, dermatologists and plastic surgeons who have undergone injection training.

  • Immediate result
  • Minimal to no swelling or bruising

  • Long lasting
  • Versatile to be used in multiple facial areas
  • Can be used in areas where other filler products have been used

NOTE: Merz NOVABEL currently has a CE Mark for marketing in the EU. It is not yet FDA approved although clinical trials will commence in the very near future.

I’m always weary of injections of any kind when it comes to cosmetics. I will definitely be more excited about it once the FDA approves it, assuming they do. I try to stick to more natural cosmetic products.

How long has Mertz been trying to get FDA approval? Do we have any estimate of how long it might take?
