Once upon a time there were a select few shades to choose from at the cosmetics counter or drugstore when it came to foundations, powders and concealers. If you didn’t fit into the basic light, medium or dark categories, you probably found yourself without any viable options to match your skin tone.
Remember Prescriptives? The brand’s iconic custom blend foundation offering started in 1979, and became a mainstay at beauty counters in Saks and Bloomies and prestige retailers for three decades. Owned by Estee Lauder, Prescriptives went online exclusively in 2011 after loyal fans were devastated at the idea of losing their personal shades. Another cult classic Elizabeth Arden Custom Foundation has featured custom foundations that can be mixed just for you at their Red Door Spas to this day.
Fast forward to 2015, and Cover FX changed the way we wear foundation with the launch of their breakthrough Custom Cover Drops ($44).
A dropper is used to deliver tiny doses of highly concentrated pigment to create the perfect complexion tint ranging from sheer (one drop), medium coverage (two drops), full coverage (three drops), and total coverage foundation (four drops). You can create your own blend anytime. For example, if you want more coverage for a night out or a selfie, just add more drops. The pigments are coated with lecithin, which is biochemically similar to the skin, so they blend nicely with minimal effort needed for mixing.
Custom Cover Drops’ pure pigment is suspended in a light solution so you can mix them with moisturizer, primer, serum, facial oil, sunscreen, foundation, BB cream, CC cream, or anything else you can think of. They can work with water, oil or silicone-based formulas, allowing total versatility. 14 shades are available to work for many/most skin types.
Giorgio Armani Maestro Glow ($64) is touted as the first bi-phase makeup elixir: skincare oils infused with pure pigments. It is more than a foundation. This nourishing fluid is light and silky and gives skin an instant glow that lasts for most of the day. The oils are best for dry skin types to maintain good hydration and a smooth texture. To activate the bi-phase formula, just shake the bottle to blend the oils and pigments together. Comes in 8 natural-looking shades, plus pure white to add a boost of brightening and highlighting.
REVEAL Concentrated Color Correcting Drops ($38) has a range of new color correcting formulas with droppers that can be used alone or added to any foundation or skin care of your choice. These contain microalgae, alguronic acid, and pigments that also target aging and uneven skin tone. There are four shades to choose from: Apricot (to neutralize dark, discolored skin), Blue (to color correct sallow skin), Green (to color correct redness), and Pink (to neutralize dull looking skin). Now you can customize your makeup in a one extra step at home to get the flawless skin you want. That’s a wrap!
Cover Fx Color Drops was purchased by the author; Giorgio Armani Maestro Glow and Algenist Reveal were sampled in-store. Opinions are my own.
