Sea buckthorn, a medium sized, hardy bush, has a rich history of medical uses in traditional medicine in China, India, Tibet, and Russia. It treats many conditions including lung, heart, and stomach problems, as well as skin disorders like eczema and dermatitis with its anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, recent clinical evidence suggests that sea buckthorn seed oil may promote wound healing when applied topically.
None of this is news to Finnish skincare company, Lumene, which since 1970 has produced skincare based on handpicked plants and berries that grow in the harsh conditions of the arctic. The idea is to transfer the plants’ strength and ability to endure intense short summers and long, cold, dark winters into skincare.
The sea buckthorn plant, one of these hardy arctic survivors, plays a major role in the newly launched Lumene Complete Rewind collection. The five-product line works to firm, plump, repair, and defend against wrinkles, thinning skin, and other signs of aging. The products contain sea buckthorn oil, which is full of plant steroids, omega fatty acids 3, 6, and 7, vitamins A and E and carotenoids that unite to help maintain elasticity and diminish free-radical damage. Wild arctic sea buckthorn is said to have 80% more antioxidants than berries grown in southern Europe.
The line fights wrinkles and skin thinning through another mechanism as well—an anti-glycation compound. Glycation is a natural physiological response that happens as people age. An overabundance of sugar molecules in the skin attaches itself to lipid or protein molecules and causes malformed collagen and elastin fibers. The result: visible facial changes like premature lines and wrinkles, slackness, uneven tone, and a dull appearance.
Lumene’s anti-glycation compound includes sea buckthorn and peptides to inhibit the reaction of sugar with the skin’s proteins. Anti-glycation is a fairly new skincare trend and can be found in products with resveratrol, an antioxidant derived from grape, such as the Caudalie anti-agers. I find it most interesting
The Lumene Complete Rewind range includes: Visible Wrinkle Eraser Serum ($29.99), Recovery Day Cream SPF 15 ($29.99), Recovery Night Cream ($29.99), Recovery Eye Cream ($24.99), and Intensive Recovery Beauty Oil ($29.99).
I’ve been using the line for a month and like the women in the brand’s study, I feel my skin is firmer, smoother, and in general looks younger. I give the collection a wholehearted thumbs-up.
Lumene is the number one selling skincare brand throughout Scandinavia. It’s also available in roughly 15 Eastern European and Latin American markets, where it is a department store brand. In the US, Lumene is available at drugstores and specialty beauty stores CVS, Ulta, and dermstore.com.
Lumene is the only skincare brand to offer anti-glycation action in its price range, and for that alone, I think it’s worth checking out the line.
