Complexion Perfection for Dry, Dehydrated, Lined and Wrinkled Skin

Without a doubt, foundation can make or break your makeup look. Not wearing foundation or using it incorrectly can add instant years to your face. On the other hand, it can camouflage a world of ills, helping you present your best face forward to the world. But finding the right foundation requires a bit of research. Many women use the same old products for donkey’s years, even though these may not be the best choices.  Whether your skin concerns are dehydration or lines and wrinkles, with the plethora of foundations on the market, you can find one that’s just right for you. No matter how flawless your complexion, a face with the right foundation will always look smoother, and have a more even tone with less redness and blotchiness. Once you hit your 30s, foundation is really a necessity for a finished, polished daytime and evening look. Think of foundation as an extension of your skincare regimen!

PROBLEM: Dehydration

SOLUTION: The ideal way to minimize imperfections lies in improving your skin as the first step – when your skin is clear and radiant, you have the ultimate foundation. Applying makeup on good skin is a real pleasure. The two go hand in hand – great skin and clever makeup. You can’t really have one without the other. But when skin gets dull and dehydrated, it makes it challenging to apply your normal foundation due to flaking and dry patches so you may need to add more moisturizer or switch your foundation.Dry skin can feel tight throughout the day and may frequently show signs of flaking or irritation, so a foundation with moisturizing ingredients is what you need. Combination skin may have dry and oily areas. Be sure you are using a treatment regimen that addresses issues of moisture retention and hydration, especially during cold and windy months when your complexion suffers most.

INGREDIENTS: If you have dry skin, hyaluronic acid is a good ingredient to look for in foundation since it plumps up lines and wrinkles, and smoothes skin. Other skin hydrators are allantoin, aloe, almond oil, and vitamin E. With skin that is on the dry side, make sure your foundation has a high SPF of 30+ or wear an under layer of broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen to increase protection and prevent your complexion from getting drier from UV light exposure. Water and oil based liquid foundations and creams can suit dry skin nicely. Oil-based foundations are only suited to dry or mature skin because the oil component can cause breakouts and clogged pores for skin with active oil glands. If your skin is chronically dry and sensitive, mineral brands won’t cause irritation and contain titanium dioxide for good sun protection.

BEST BETS: Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup SPF10 ($46) contains active mineralized water to keep skin nourished and hold moisture in. Laura Mericier Moisturizing Foundation ($42) is especially formulated for drier or more mature skin, and has a lightweight feel with “buildable” coverage. Bobbi Brown Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Baum ($50) can be used in place of, or on top of moisturizer. La Prairie Cellular Treatment Foundation Satin SPF 15 ($70) nourishes while it lavishes the skin with moisture from a patented formula that activates the skin’s metabolism and improves its ability to maintain moisture.

PROBLEM: Lines & Wrinkles

SOLUTION: To soften lines you have to be meticulous about blending your foundation. Adjust the level of coverage for specific regions of your face, and remove any excess with a clean sponge. Avoid using greasy creams where you have the most lines. Foundation primers are usually silicone based and can clog pores, so are best for dry skin types. Beware – anything slippery will make foundation migrate and sink into creases. If you have dry skin, choose a lighter texture with added hydrating ingredients. Anti-aging foundations usually contain added ingredients to treat skin as well as add coverage and pigment.

INGREDIENTS: Good ingredients to look for may include caffeine for skin firming, soy, peptides, retinol, and hyaluronic acid.
