It’s no secret that metallics are trending, and the gown-wearing celebrities at the 2017 Academy Awards appear to have tipped the scale to favor gold. The proof? Emma Stone in Givenchy, Dakota Johnson’s Gucci number, Jessica Biel’s figure-hugging Kaufmanfranco, Nicole Kidman donning Armani Privé and Robin Roberts working it in Badgley Mischka.
I have to admit I’m a sucker for a shimmery dress or a sparkly top myself, but my favorite way to pull off this trend is with gilded makeup — it’s a winning look every time. The Midas touch is an easy way to be on-trend and when it comes to gold, you can’t go wrong. Work it into your makeup routine as a wash of color on your eyes, opaque streak on your lids or as soft or graphic eye liner. Dust it on to highlight your cheekbones. Add it to the inner corners of your eyes to make them sparkle. Try it on your décolletage area, shoulders or legs to enhance those areas and warm up your skin. Add a touch of golden shimmer to your hair or paint it on your nails.
Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Vintage Black Gold ($32) gives you a foil-finish payoff that can be used as a light shimmer shadow or built upon for a high-metallic opaque color payoff. This kit also includes a handy mixing tray. To use, add a small dab to the mixing tray, one drop of the liquid eye primer, mix together and use your fingertip or a brush to press into lid while gently blending.
Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Color in Sun Worship ($62) features a super-pigmented metallic cream and a sparkling, shimmering powder shadow in a two-tiered palette that can be worn on the eyes or face. Wear them alone or together to create the look of your dreams. Each glides on effortlessly and leaves behind a molten, shimmering finish.
Guerlain Météorites Light-Revealing Pearls of Powder ($65) illuminates as it blurs wrinkles and other complexion imperfections. This limited-edition color corrector blends gold pigments for radiance, blue pigments for color correction and pink pigments for a healthy looking flush. Swirl a fluffy brush in these pearls and sweep onto your skin. You’ll absolutely flip for the wonderful violet scent that gives all of Guerlain’s Météorites a cult following.
Tatcha Gold Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm ($36) combines actual flecks of 24-karat gold leaf with camellia oil and squalene so lips stay soft, nourished and hydrated. To use, simply dip your fingertip into the pot and apply liberally.
Nars Nail Polish in Orgasm ($20) is an understated take on the bold gold nail. Brush on this peachy-pink with gold sheen polish for a more natural looking Midas touch. The line has an improved upon formula with an ultra-glossy, long-last finish, plus the removable outer cap makes it easy to open and hold while the newly designed brush makes it easy to apply.
DryBar Gold Mine Shimmering Leave-In Conditioner ($29) is a multi-tasker that conditions, protects, detangles, smooths texture, restores elasticity, adds shine and leaves behind a radiant golden shimmer. Apply to damp or dry hair and wash hands afterwards to remove superfine mica from palms. It’s safe for all hair types including color treated and keratin treated hair.
