BOOTS No 7 PROTECT & PERFECT SERUM VS ROC RETINOL CORREXION DEEP WRINKLE SERUM
HOW DO THEY STACK UP?
BOOTS No 7 Protect& Perfect (The US version is marketed as Protect & Renew www.cvs.com ) had so much media coverage in 2008 that some women have been led to believe that if you don’t use it, your wrinkles are going to set up house on your face forever. The serum was touted as the Holy Grail for aging skin, as if there could be ONLY one product that could ever be the magic bullet everyone needs. The Boots serum contains retinol and antioxidants in undisclosed amounts – nothing novel or unique there at all. Although it has been claimed to receive the blessing of an “independent” third party researcher – it was later uncovered that the research was funded by Boots and there were no tests done to compare this one miracle product against any other thousands of others on the market! Hmmmm…..sounds a bit misleading, right? This solo product quicklyn became a cult phenomenon around the world.
We set out to find something else in the same price range to compare. RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum seemed like the perfect adversary and it was certainly up to the task. Roc is THE company that discovered the retinol molecule all the way back in 1995 in France, long before it became part of the global Johnson & Johnson skincare family.
So we decided to try them both side by side- Boots No 7 hero anti-aging serum next to the challenger RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum…May I have a drum roll please?
Although it is a matter of personal taste and preference, our testers overwhelmingly found the RoC serum to be so much nicer to use. It feels silky to the touch, and this is one of the few over-the-counter mass brands that has good science behind it and really works. The texture is more like a luxury brand than a drugstore find and the lightweight serum is quite pleasant. It can be used once or twice a day – let it get absorbed – and for dry skin, put a moisturizer with SPF on top for daytime, or a night cream at bedtime. Definitely makes a differnece in your skin if you keep using it.
In contrast, Boots comes in a characteristically generic bottle with a plain white and blue box, and the look and feel falls far short. Although packaging surely doesn’t make a product one way or the other….it certainly adds to the product’s likeability. The more you like it, the more pleasant it is to use, and the more you are going to use it to reap the benefits.
AND THE WINNER IS…..ROC BEAT BOOTS No 7 IN THE RETINOL SERUM CAMP HANDS DOWN -IN TERMS OF THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT, THE FORMULATION, PACKAGING AND THE PUMP, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE VISIBLE IMPROVEMENTS IT DELIVERS IN YOUR SKIN. WE STILL CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT ALL THE FRENZY WAS ALL ABOUT. HUH?
