The majority of Brits (74%) gets up and out of the house in the morning in under 30 minutes, according to a just released study from Clinique. Even more concerning is that a whopping 20% say they flee the house in less than 10 minutes. Forget about a healthy breakfast, in 10 minutes, I’d be lucky to wear matching shoes.
The day’s stress starts even before Brits get out of bed. According to the survey, 38% said they check their email as soon as they wake up. Forget about morning romance; Brits are actually four times more likely to check email than have a “cheeky moment” with a partner in the morning.
We all know how stress takes its toll on our looks, but for many British women (35%), skipping their morning beauty regimen because of lack of time affects their confidence and sense of attractiveness.
But that may be counter productive—as feeling good about oneself is one way to offset stress. “It is common for people to only have a few minutes to get ready in the morning, so anything you can do to make the most of the time you have will help. For women, giving yourself enough time to make sure you’re looking and feeling your best can bolster self-esteem and set you up for a positive day,” states psychologist Honey Langcaster-James.
Her tips for managing mornings: pre-plan (pick out clothes the night before); let your mind simmer down before sleeping (don’t check email before going to bed); and keep a routine to maximize your time.
