DESTINATION LONDON: OLYMPIC BEAUTY, PART I

07-09-12 | Posted by

With the Olympic trials over and the chosen athletes on their way to the Summer Olympics in London, Beautyinthebag takes a look at some of our favorite skincare and body brands originating from across the merry old pond. The British may have a reputation for being buttoned up, but these products will definitely enliven your beauty regimen.

St. Tropez

Just in time for the summer, sunless tanning products from St. Tropez put the bronze in safe tanning. We love that it’s a gradual tan which means it looks natural and not orange and streaky like some other self-tanners. St. Tropez’s main tanning agent is dihydroxyacetone – a colorless sugar that interacts with the amino acids in your skin to create a natural-looking tan – and erythrulos – a naturally-moisturizing ingredient derived from raspberries that will give your tan a smooth color that lasts longer and fades evenly.

We recommend the St. Tropez Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse ($40) because it’s super lightweight and very easy to apply. Using the applicator mitt (included), simply sweep on the velvety mousse to get an even and natural tan – without the damaging effects from staying out in the sun too long.

Liz Earle

Founded in 1995, Liz Earle and Kim Buckland decided to produce high quality skincare products that boasted natural ingredients and a responsible effect on the environment. Liz Earle skincare is not tested on animals, ingredients are always responsibly sourced and sustainable, and the finished products are produced following the best ethic and organic practices possible.

Our favorite product from this environmentally-conscious label is the Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser ($24.50). Concentrated yet gentle, it is made with eucalyptus and cocoa butter and is safe and powerful enough for every age and skin type. This plant-based cleanser has a two phase action: cleansing and polishing. The cleansing process is free from mineral oil and effectively removes all traces of face and eye makeup with its rich and creamy texture. The polishing action gently sloughs off dead skin cells to reveal cleaner and softer skin.

OSKIA

Derived from the Ancient English words for “delivering nutrients” and “beauty,” OSKIA is a high-performance skincare brand that is designed to rebuild skin cell health and target other skin concerns. We like this brand because it is jam pack full of vital skin nutrients like minerals, glucides, proteins, and amino acids that will bring your skin back to a vibrant and healthy state.

We love everything in OSKIA’s Skinsense range because the products have essential cell nutrients and clinically-proven bioactives to promote radiant skin. The Perfect Cleanser (£32.50) is nourishing and rich in youth-boosting minerals, prebiotics, and vitamins, which deep clean, decongest, brighten, and restore the skin’s moisture. The Nutri-Active Day Cream, (£52) winner of 2012’s Natural Health Award for Best Moisturizer is an advanced lightweight, anti-aging day cream that provides hydration to promote skin cell growth as well as helps prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Jo Malone

London facialist Jo Malone founded her world famous line of fragrances in 1994, which has grown to include an extensive range of bath and body products. Our go-to is the brand’s Body Crème ($75), which combines a silky smooth texture with all the scents we have grown to love.

The brand’s five different scent groups – light floral, fruity, citrus, floral, and spicy – all have matching creams so you are sure to find one that suits your taste and lifestyle. An uplifting treat for summer is the Grapefruit Body Creme.

The Body Shop

This global beauty brand was founded in Brighton in 1976 by ethical beauty pioneer Anita Roddick. At the time, her environmentally-friendly approach was a fresh breath of air for the beauty industry. Not to mention, all the wonderfully scented lotions and crèmes are based around the fact that they have never been tested on animals and are staunchly fair trade.

A tub of the Body Butter, one of the brand’s most sought after products, is packed full of Community Fair Trade nut oils to keep your skin soft all day long. Our favorite for the summer is Sweet Lemon Body Butter ($18), which contains Community Fair Trade shea butter and provides 24-hour hydration for normal to dry skin.

Molton Brown

Founded in London in 1973, Molton Brown proved to be a natural counterpoint to a London that – at the time – was very much in love with synthetics. Using only the highest, most naturally sustainable, ingredients for body, skin, and hair, with 90 percent of their products produced in its Hertfordshire, England factory, these cruelty-free products are “made in England, inspired by the world.”

Right now, we’re in love with the Paradisiac Pink Pepperpod Bath and Shower Wash ($30) with its fiery pink pepperpod extract (rich in antioxidants, it is also known as the “grains of paradise”), ginger oil, and patchouli scent. It’s a much needed invigorating kick for those languid, hot summer days.
