What does a cosmetic dentist offer that a regular dentist does not?

There is actually no technical specialty in cosmetic dentistry; however, you can have an expertise in this area that comes from doing multiple cosmetic cases.  When seeking out a dentist to perform cosmetic procedures, make sure that the dentist has a lot of experience in performing these types of procedures. If you are looking to have veneers done, make sure you ask to see cases that he or she has done, and ask how many of these procedure he or she does on a daily basis.  Avoid going to a dentist who has a general practice and may only do one case a month.

What role does good hygiene play in the overall look of your smile?

Having a clean mouth gives the appearance of a healthy mouth. Many people have poor hygiene and have plaque and tartar growing all over their teeth. This awkward appearance diminishes the appearance of their smile. People who don’t floss at all and don’t go to the dentist to get professional cleanings could have plaque accumulating all over their teeth and when they open their mouth this can even be seen by the naked eye.

A certain celebrity recently said that she uses mouthwash but doesn’t brush regularly. How would you react if you heard one of your patients had a similar regimen?

It is shocking that someone who is known for their beautiful smile would take such terrible care of their teeth.  The most important way to take care of your teeth is brushing twice a day. There is no other way to effectively clean your teeth and thus ensure the longevity and health of your smile.  The oral cavity has so many crevices and has such a large surface area that brushing is the only way to do this properly.  While flossing and using mouthwash are excellent additions to one’s daily routine, they are insufficient alone.

Teeth bleaching – does it really make teeth more sensitive?

There aren’t any permanent negative effects of bleaching. It does not destroy the enamel nor does it affect the health of the teeth. However, some people may experience slight sensitivity after the bleaching process but this is very temporary and will go away within a day or two.

What is the most popular service offered in your practice?

Our office has an expertise in cosmetics, thus people come to us to create a more beautiful smile, whether it’s porcelain veneers, bonding, or bleaching.  We give patients smiles they dream about having.

How long do cosmetic dental procedures last?

This depends on the procedure.  Porcelain veneers can last up to twenty years, whereas the results of bleaching vary from patient to patient but will probably not last more than a year and need to be maintained.

Do more patients tend to come in to your office before big events, or as they get older and need to freshen up their smiles?

Patients come from all over the world to have their smile rejuvenated.  Their reasons vary, but most are dissatisfied with their smile and want to do something to improve it. Many of our patients are older and have teeth that are stained and yellow, but some are younger and simply have teeth that do not reflect the appearance they want to have.

What trends are you seeing among your patients in terms of popular procedures and new requests?

Many people want their veneers to look perfectly natural, so we customize the veneers to fit the individual, and may even include an imperfection or two so that the smile looks absolutely natural.

One of other rewarding aspects of practicing dentistry is being able to give back. In addition to doing multiple pro bono cases each year, my partners and I have set up a foundation called “Smile Givers,” an organization which will provide cosmetic dentistry to abused and battered women to help them get back into the work place.

What are the most common pre-wedding cosmetic dental procedures?

There is no greater inspiration to improve ones appearance than a big event.  Many brides, and especially parents of the brides who want to look their best in pictures, come to our office for a smile makeover with veneers well before the special occasion.  For those whose teeth do not need as much work, many brides like to come in a few weeks before their wedding to have their smiles brightened with an in office whitening procedure.

What can a bride or member of the bridal party do with only a few weeks to go before the big day to make a maximum impact in photos?

The easiest and quickest way to brighten a smile is an in office whitening procedure combined with the use of bleaching trays made by the dentist.  In office whitening is relatively quick and can be done in 45 minutes, with instantaneous results. Bleaching trays can then be worn at home prior to the event to maximize the whitening effect.

Who is your typical client?

Anyone who is concerned with the aesthetics of their smile.

Any famous smiles you can take credit for in print?

Curtis Jackson (50 Cent), Meredith Viera, and multiple others.
