Pink is the new black during October as beauty brands roll out Pink Ribbon products to support Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) month. The effort dates back to a 1985 partnership between the American Cancer Society and AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical company behind Tamoxifen, arguably the world’s most popular breast cancer treatment. The month of October became associated with raising awareness of this disease and beauty brands became more involved as the years went on.
Breast cancer affects nearly all of us at some level. Statistics show that 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. While the number of cases has definitely decreased in past years, the breast cancer death rate among women in the U.S. is higher than any other form of cancer except lung cancer. In 2011, there were over 230,000 newly diagnosed cases of invasive breast cancer alone.
For the past two decades, beauty brands have contributed to BCA by donating a portion of limited edition product sales to breast cancer research and awareness organizations. Here are some of the beautiful ways that beauty is giving back this year, and how you can help raise money for a cure.

Estee Lauder has always been a pioneer when it comes to Breast Cancer Awareness month, having started the association with the Pink Ribbon and BCA, thanks to the late Evelyn Lauder. The company will donate 20% of all proceeds from its BCA products to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). You can stock up on the Estee Lauder Pink Ribbon options, which includes the Evelyn Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley Dream Lip Collection ($29.50) that includes a Pure Color Lipstick in Candy, a Pure Color Gloss in Pink Innocence, and a pink snakeskin-printed clutch. But this year’s must-have BCA product is without a doubt the Evelyn Lauder Dream Compact ($75), filled with translucent pressed powder (shown above).
2012 marks the 20th year that the Estee Lauder Companies have been involved in BCA, and to herald the occasion, the company is unveiling a live, interactive exhibition showcasing the history of the BCA campaign in front of the GM Building in New York City at 767 Fifth Avenue. It runs from October 1-3 from 8:00am to 7:00pm each day, and will showcase archived videos, photographs, and key milestones. The Estee Lauder Companies BCA Campaign Fund will donate $1 to BCRF for every post on the campaign’s interactive Facebook timeline during October, capped at $25,000.
