Meet the Beverly Hills Derm

Dr. Ava Shamban was the face behind the great skin, as the featured dermatologist on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover.” The board certified owner of the Laser Institute for Dermatology and European Skin Care in Santa Monica, California is in private practice helping patients achieve top tier results off camera as well. She prides herself on her work as a skin scientist and product and technology researcher and developer.  She is also the Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UCLA.

What fillers and devices are you most excited about right now?

I’m a big fan of the hyaluronins, Restylane and Juvederm, because they are so versatile in the face, can be used under the eyes, in the lips as well as to augment cheekbones and the mid face.  In addition, they replace a natural component of skin and Restylane has been shown to stimulate your own collagen production, making the effect very long lasting.

How do you see antiaging skincare evolving in the next 3-5 years?

It is an exciting time for anti aging skin care with better molecules, improved penetration into the skin and the availability of home devices, such as the Tanda red and blue light to stimulate collagen (the former) and treat acne (the latter). In the future there will be more active ingredients that may not only be better at stimulating collagen, the main protein in skin that gives it firmness, but actually prolong cell life and vitality.

How would you describe the Beverly Hills client you see? What does she like?

The Beverly Hills client is sophisticated and educated.  Those who come to see me want to look like themselves, but better; not like I’ve prepared them for a witness protection program so that no one can recognize them!  I like the results of my work to be subtle.

What products do you personally swear by?

My cream, Extreme Specialist, packed with anti oxidants, peptides and ceramides, which is great for my dry antique skin, and Renova.  Sunscreen, of course!

Mother of three boys!

What’s your favorite bag?

A Loewe’s bag I got in Spain about 12 years ago.
