You know you’re supposed to wear sunscreen religiously, cover up with a sun protective hat and clothing and stay out of the sun as much as possible, but it is summer and you are human after all. If your regimen has been less than stellar and you have the telltale signs of hyper-pigmentation, sun spots and/or freckles (aka sun damage) to prove it, there’s a lot your dermatologist can do to help reverse some of the damage, but if you’re not ready to book that appointment just yet there’s still a lot you can do at home to undo the damage.
When mingled into your skincare regimen, certain products can give you research-proven results to treat your sun-caused concerns. Here’s what you need to take matters into your own hands and get the results you’re looking for:
SKIN LIGHTENER: Vitamin C serum is a great way reduce the appearance of spots and other damage caused by the sun. It also helps boost collagen product, reduce inflammation and help your skin heal. For best results apply daily immediately after your morning cleanse and tone, and use 2-3 times a week consecutively as part of your evening routine as well.
Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Vitamin C+ Serum ($118) works to correct skin discolorations, boosts radiance, firmness and elasticity, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
SUN PROTECTION: Sunscreen is necessary to keep the skin protected from the sun’s damaging rays and to make sure the results your seeing keep going in the right direction. For best results choose a broad-spectrum product with an SPF 30 or higher and reapply at least every two hours to stay protected.
Mustela Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen Lotion ($16) is safe and gentle enough for babies and children but ideal for everyone in the family. This titanium dioxide and zinc oxide mineral-based broad spectrum lotion is hypoallergenic, water and sweat resistant for up to 40 minutes and has been awarded the Melanoma International Foundation’s Seal of Approval.
EXFOLIATING SERUM: Alpha Hydroxy Acid serums will slough away the topmost dead skin cells so that over time the hyper pigmented cells are dissolved and the newer, fresher, healthier-looking cells are revealed. For best results apply 2-3 consecutive nights per week as part of your evening routine.
Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum ($60) targets freckles, spots, hyper- pigmentation and uneven texture thanks to the combined efforts of glycolic acid, hydroquinone 2% and hexapeptide-2.
RETINOL: Vitamin A products used once a week as your nightly serum will stimulate skin cell turnover so newer, more evenly pigmented cells will rise to the surface. It also has powerful antioxidant properties and will help repair sun-damaged skin.
