The right foundation will even out your skin tone, enhance your complexion, and leave you looking fresh-faced and radiant. Finding the right shade, formula, and finish can be tricky but it doesn’t have to be.
For most women, the right shade will virtually disappear into your skin and even everything out. You’ll want to get as close to your natural complexion as possible, unless you’re on the mature side and your skin-tone has started to fade or is ruddy at times. If that’s what you’re experiencing you’ll look best with a foundation one shade darker than your natural skin tone with yellow undertones. It will warm everything up, neutralize redness and add a healthy glow.
3 STEPS TO PREP
- Start with hydrated skin. Give your moisturizer a few minutes to be absorbed before moving on.
- Apply primer. It will make your foundation last longer and fill in pores and fine lines giving you a smoother base for your foundation.
- Use a creamy, under eye concealer (that matches your foundation) on dark circles and the inner corner of your eyes before applying your foundation. You’ll feel the need to use less foundation this way.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT FORMULA AND APPLICATION METHOD
- Dry Skin: Use an oil-based liquid, cream or stick foundation. For liquids and cream foundations, apply with a flat-topped synthetic brush which won’t absorb makeup. Blend outward from the center of your face. You can use the stick foundation directly on the skin and lightly buff with a sponge.
- Normal Skin: Your options are wide open. Experiment with several until you find your preference.
- Oily Skin: Choose an oil-free formula foundation. You might like an oil-free cream-to-powder which will dry to a powdery finish or stick with a loose or pressed powder formula. To keep it natural, use a fluffy brush to sweep on, concentrating on the T-zone.
Tinted moisturizers, BB cream, and CC creams are ideal when you want a less is more look. They’ll even out your skin “just-enough” and leave you looking fresh-faced. On days when you want a bit more coverage, they can also be mixed with your cream or liquid foundation.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT FINISH
- A matte finish is ideal for those with normal to oily and very oily skin. Most are formulated to control oil and help to keep your complexion shine-free.
- A semi-matte finish works for all and gives a very natural look. If it doesn’t say it’s matte or hydrating chances are it falls into this category.
- A luminizing foundation is ideal for mature women with fine lines or those with sallow skin. It’s usually moisturizing and formulated with finely ground light-reflective particles to subtly diffuse fine lines and wrinkles and add a radiant glow.
5 TIPS TO GET IT RIGHT:
- Never buy foundation without checking it out in natural light first. Test on your jaw line before heading outside to check it out in natural light. It’s the only way to make sure it’s a perfect match.
- After applying your foundation, lightly press a clean puff or tissue into skin to remove excess.
- Instead of trying to cover up fine lines and wrinkles, apply less makeup there to keep it from settling in and actually accentuating those areas or use a primer, which will allow makeup to more easily glide over imperfections and give it longevity.
- Adjust your color seasonally to make sure it’s always a perfect match.
- Exfoliate up to two times per week to get rid of dead skin cells and keep your complexion smooth.

I’m a big fan of tea. Give me peppermint, chai, rooibos, and matcha any day of the week and I’m a happy girl. I discovered matcha green tea many years ago and fell in love with the interesting taste, a mega dose of antioxidants, the fact that it can boost metabolism and help slay calories consumed. I also like that it’s rich in fiber, vitamins and chlorophyll, and can help lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. If all of that isn’t enough to turn you on to match, it also has major perks when applied topically. Scientific studies have shown it has anti-inflammatory properties, can help minimize rosacea and acne and will even protect you against free radical damage. Holy benefits!
If you prefer to go the completely natural route, you can make your own moisturizing, nourishing Matcha Mask at home. I like mixing 1 teaspoon of Matcha Green Tea powder with 1/2 teaspoon of honey for its antibacterial, antioxidant and moisturizing properties. *Depending on the honey you’re using, you might need to add slightly more or less than 1/2 teaspoon to form a paste consistency. Simply, apply the mixture to your face and neck, and leave it on for up to 15 minutes before removing with warm water and a washcloth.

Watching The Doctors the other day I learned a little something new that I’d never heard of in all my years of beauty reporting. Dr. Travis Stork shared that “nature knows best” and the most flattering shade of lipstick for you is one that matches your nipple color. Now, that’s not something you hear every day!
Since nipples come in light and dark shades of pink, red and brown, here are 7 pretty lipsticks that just might match what you’ve got going on:

Available in six buildable colors.
Marc Jacobs Kiss Pop Lipstick in Pow ($28), described as a peony pink, is highly pigmented so it lasts for hours on end. It’s also formulated with honey, silica and nutrient-rich ingredients for a smooth, comfortable, transfer- resistant application. Be forewarned that the chrome design of the lipstick case is so friggin’ cool that it will make you proud to whip it out whenever and wherever you want to apply it.
Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in Party Pink ($20) is a brighter shade of intense matte pigment in a liquid formula that dries down to a smear-resistant finish and stays put for hours. You will find it in a range of nudes, corals, pinks, berry-shades and browns.

I’ve long been a fan of the ponytail. Besides liking the low-maintenance vibe they tend to give out, ponytails actually work better with “dirty” hair and make it easy to go an extra day or two without shampooing, a plus if you color your hair. I like that they work for all occasions, from something as casual as heading to the gym to hanging out with friends to going to the office and even going out for drinks or dinner. Just add a pair of spectacular earrings and you could even head to a black tie event, like Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Jenner, only two of the celebs spotted at the recent American Music Awards sporting the ponytail.
The pony is one hairstyle that’s only going to get hotter in 2016 so now is a great time to perfect it. The good news is if you don’t have enough length and/or volume to pull it off naturally there are many options available that can help you do it in style anyway. A great one is RPZL’s Pony in an Instant! ($100; $150), a fully customized clip-in hair extension pony that’s 100% Virgin Remy Hair and expertly matched by their specialists for color, length, and texture.
I interviewed RPZL’s co-founder, Lisa Richards, who was more than happy to share her expertise with BITB’s readers on everything pony:
NWS: What are the benefits to wearing a ponytail?
LR: Putting your hair in a ponytail is a great way to give it the perfect, trendy look while simultaneously making it comfortable and hassle-free. It not only saves you time (you can get away without washing it too, giving your hair a much needed break), but also gets your hair out of your face, which can help ensure you enjoy yourself whether dressed up for a cocktail party, dancing the night away or working out. It also goes well with any hair color and outfit! Another beauty secret is that a tight pony offers an instant facelift.
NWS: Why are ponytails trending right now?
LR: Throwing unwashed hair up into a ponytail is the go-to for A-list celebs grocery shopping, après yoga, hiking in the Hollywood Hills, or you know, being just like us. But lately, whether in a high pony, a low side part look, or something in between, the once casual ‘do has been upgraded to red carpet status. It has been seen lately at every Award Show or Red carpet event on favorite celebrities such as Ana Kendrick, Emma Roberts, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.
NWS: What are the best ponytail looks right now? Please explain how to do.
LR: Either a high or low ponytail! To get this modern looking pony, simply pull your hair into a ponytail – high or low pony. After creating your pony, grab a 1-inch section of hair from the underside and spray it with a strong-hold hairspray like R + Co Outer Space to give it some grab. Then, tightly wrap it around the hair band and secure it underneath with bobbies. It not only looks more polished, but gives the ponytail a little bit of lift, too.
To take your pony to the next level, use RPZL’s NEW Pony! extension (RPZL’s Headmasters will also remotely match your pony to your hair color via uploading a selfie). First, secure your desired pony. Then take the RPZL Pony! and simply insert the comb (attached to the extension) into your ponytail to secure it, then wrap and snap the Velcro around your pony, and use the already designed section of hair to wrap it around, giving it the complete look. It will blend flawlessly and will give your pony more length and volume in an instant!
NWS: What are your best tricks or tips to make your ponytail look modern (not dated!)?
LR: Covering up the elastic is the oldest Hollywood trick in the book for making a ponytail look red carpet-ready in seconds. You can also tug out pieces on the top of your head to give an effortless feel—the more undone, the cooler it looks. In addition, you can use a large barrel curling iron to add subtle waves from mid-shaft to ends to give it a more romantic, casual sporty look. Another one of our favorite pony looks can be achieved by adding shine and using a flatiron for that sleek and chic look. The stick-straight strands dramatically dress up the look.
NWS: What’s the best ponytail look for the mature woman?
LR: The low pony and side part are the epitome of understated elegance.
