Nudes or the “no makeup” look is becoming more popular. There is a huge range of nude makeup shades that are available — Maybelline, Urban Decay, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and more — and even some celebrities, like Jennifer Aniston, are embracing the au naturale look. Aniston recently ditched the makeup for her role in Cake, saying that she found it “dreamy, empowering, and liberating.”
Makeup artist Gita Bass is fond of the nude look, and has worked with celebrities like Ashley Greene, Selena Gomez, Katie Holmes, Debra Messing, among others. Her mantra is about taking care of your skin first, and the makeup will come later. She gave Beauty in the Bag 7 great “no makeup” look tips.
Step One: Get a Thorough Cleanse
Start the day with a clean slate. You can use a simple cleanser like the multi-vitamin-packed Simple Kind To Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes ($6), or a soap like Erno Laszlo’s Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar ($45), which also exfoliates skin, and doesn’t leave any residue.
Step Two: Hydrate
Bass is a firm believer in moisturizing your skin, and more importantly, during the winter months, using rich moisturizers that are packed with Vitamin E and antioxidants.
Step Three: Use a Base
Bass advises using a lightweight foundation as a base, and to blend with a damp makeup sponge. Some foundations we’ve recently been obsessed with include tarte’s Amazonian clay BB tinted moisturizer ($41) and Clinique’s Even Better Makeup ($27).
Step Four: Eyes
Before applying clear or a light brown mascara, wipe the lash line with a makeup pad like Simple Eye Makeup Remover Pads to remove the skin’s natural oils, and this will also help the mascara to stay on. Bass believes that “a groomed brow is essential for this look,” so she suggests to use a brow powder.
Step Five: Lips
Bass advises to keep the lips lush and moisturized with Vaseline Rosy Lips Therapy for a universally flattering shade of pink.
Step Six: Cheeks
For a natural, healthy looking glow, apply a bronze-hued cheek stain.
Step Seven: Take the Night Off
At the end of the day, don’t forget to take your makeup off. Wash away the dirt, oil, and makeup before hitting the sheets.
