August is Hairloss Awareness Month which drives home the issues so many people – women included – deal with on a daily basis. Hair naturally thins with age, but there are many other factors that can contribute to excessive shedding, including genetics, medications, hormones, illness, and of course, stress. Over time, the hair follicles shrink and eventually they stop growing altogether.
According to Washington DC dermatologist Rebecca Kazin, hair thinning is a huge concern for both men and women. “A type of stress-related hairloss is called telogen effluvium, which is the second most common hair loss condition seen by Dermatologists. The acutely stressful event (death in the family, job loss, divorce, exams, etc.) ‘shocks’ the hair into the resting phase of the hair growth cycle and those affected can lose up to 20% of their hair. The shedding can occur up to 2-3 months after the stressful event. It typically grows back within 6 to 9 months.”
Hereditary hairloss, called androgenetic alopecia, is another major cause that affects approximately 80 million people in the U.S, according to the AAD.
New England based hair restoration surgeon Robert Leonard weighs in on choosing the right products to restore and maintain a full head of hair. “Clogged hair follicles do not cause hair loss. But it is very important to use hair care products that thoroughly cleanse the scalp of cellular debris and sebum; however, this issue does not cause follicles to become clogged, causing thinning hair.” He also dispelled the common myth that frequent shampooing causes hair to become thin. “Daily shampooing is important to keep both the scalp and the hair clean,” says Leonard.
