Whether out of necessity or sheer desire, we’ve all dipped into our significant other’s product stash at some point (or even stolen something and made it our own). Perhaps the smell reminds you of your man—or you simply like his version more than what you have in your own rotation—but if you think men’s and women’s skin are the same, guess again. “In general, male skin is thicker, and it produces more sweat and oil,” explains Washington, D.C. dermatologist Terrence Keaney.
Men and women may have different skin attributes and needs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dip into your significant other’s product stash if you want to. “Aside from marketing tactics, the main differences between these skincare products are fragrance, packaging and possibly mattifying ingredients to account for men’s increased oil and sweat, and there’s no reason for women to avoid male formulations,” says Dr. Keaney. So with that said, here’s a list of men’s grooming products that BITB girls have been known to swipe…
Foreo Cleanser for Men ($30)
If there were an award for the coolest cleanser ever, this one would win it. The iridescent deep-blue gel magically morphs into a white foam as you wash, and although it’s formulated for thicker, oilier male skin, the salicylic acid in it can help keep women’s skin clear, too.
Clarisonic Alpha Fit ($189)
Beyond removing all the dirt, sweat and oil that accumulates over the course of the day, this sonic cleansing device helps exfoliate as well, which is important for a close shave and less ingrown hairs. The men’s brush features shorter bristles to deep-cleanse thicker skin, and although we don’t recommend sharing Clarisonic heads, you can get your own and pop it on his device anytime.
Kiehl’s Facial Fuel SPF 15 ($35)
Formulated with skin-energizing caffeine, this invigorating moisturizer helps anyone get up and go. It also contains free-radical-fighting vitamin C, which is good news for the guys since their skin naturally produces less antioxidants than the ladies (but you can never have too much environmental protection!).
Clinique for Men Aloe Shave Gel ($17.50)
This lightweight gel gets skin ready for the razor—and if it’s good enough for his face, it’ll work just fine on your legs, underarms or bikini line. It’s also oil-free so it won’t lead to breakouts or leave his skin greasy.
Nuxe Men 24H Protection Deodorant ($15)
Offering all-day odor protection without alcohol, aluminum salts or white residue, this deodorant has a masculine, woody scent that women will gravitate toward (and even want to wear themselves).
And if you ever try to steer your significant other in the right skincare direction, consider sharing these tips with your main man…
Consistency is key: “Skincare is a habit for most women, but sticking to a product regimen is a challenge for many men,” explains Dr. Keaney. “I recommend that men make skincare part of their shaving and toothbrushing routine.”
Exfoliation is a must: “I steer male patients away from scrubs because they tend to overdo it. Instead I recommend the Alpha Fit to exfoliate skin before shaving,” explains Dr. Keaney.
Why washing is important: Dr. Keaney emphasizes, “Cleansing is especially important for men because it helps remove dead cells, free trapped hairs and prepare skin for shaving.”
